These “I am a woman in control of my destiny” shoes remind me of a favorite movie “The Lady In Red”.
Pamela Sue Martin starred in this film as the mistress of depression-era gangster John Dillinger. At the time this movie was created Pamela was best known for the sweet and innocent character she played on the hit TV series as Nancy Drew. To shake up her girl next door image, after all a sweet girl like Nancy Drew would never be seen wearing the Dereon Smart Delux Block Pump, Pamela took on role in this film which cast her as a sweet but feisty farm girl with big Hollywood dreams.
Pamela’s character “The Lady In Red” is loosely based on the real life girlfriend of John Dillinger of Polly Hamilton who was renamed Polly Franklin for the film. John Dillinger at at the time this movie was set was public enemy number one and at the top of the FBI’s most wanted list for committing a series of daring bank robberies throughout the United States. Polly Franklin became famous herself for being on the arm of John Dillinger when he was shot walking out of the Biograph Theater in Chicago in 1934. For a movie made in 1979 this drama/thriller had plenty of steamy sex scenes for Pamela Sue Martin to shake off her goody two shoes TV persona. Unlike Nancy Drew, Polly Franklin definately would have worn the Dereon Smart Delux Block Pump had it been available at the time. This movie provides a great social commentary and a surprisingly faithful recounting of the events that unfolded in real life.
Pamela undergoes a transformation in this film from an innocent farm girl to a street wise brassy hustler while never losing the sweetness that made you root for her throughout her life. This transformation is subtly depicted onscreen with changes in wardrobe.
